4-Hour Specific Semiautomatic Firearm Safety Course (SB25-003)
*Before you take this class, you must have completed your CPW application, name-based criminal background check and received an eligibility card through your local sheriff's department.
Prepare for Colorado’s new specific semiautomatic firearm requirements and build rock-solid safety skills with this official 4-hour Basic Firearms Safety Course developed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
This state-standardized course is designed for individuals who have already completed a CPW-certified Hunter Education course and need to fulfill the training requirement for purchasing or transferring specified semiautomatic firearms under Colorado law (effective August 1, 2026).
What You’ll Learn
- The Four Fundamentals of Firearm Safety
- How semi-automatic firearms operate (recoil vs. gas-operated systems)
- The complete 8-step semi-automatic cycle of operation
- Magazine types and function (tube, internal box, and detachable box magazines)
- Detailed anatomy, nomenclature, loading, unloading, and clearing procedures for semi-automatic handguns, shotguns, and rifles
- Secure storage standards, locking devices, safes, and child safety best practices
- Colorado-specific laws for firearm storage and unattended vehicle storage (C.R.S. § 18-12-114 & § 18-12-114.5)
- How to talk to children about firearms and keep your home safe
- Firearm death prevention and understanding Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs)
Course Requirements for Certification
- Attend the full 4-hour in-person class
- Pass a written exam with a score of 90% or higher
- Successfully complete the hands-on practical skills assessment
Upon successful completion, your certification will be reported directly to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Firearms Training and Safety Course Record System. Certification is valid for 5 years.

This class takes place at Dragonman's Shooting Range. A description of what to bring, where to go, and location directions are included in your confirmation receipt. All students must be 21 years or older or given parental permission and written consent if under 18 years of age. Anyone under 21 is not permitted to for a firearm purchase.
Refunds: 80% refunds are given after sign-up with 24 hours or more notice. No refunds are issued with less than 24 hours before class or after 60 days of no attendance.
